LONE
RANGER DEAD
Actor
Turned Marine Killed in Action
LONG
BEACH, CAL.—Marine Corps sergeant Lee Powell, who before the war played the Lone
Ranger in movies, was killed in action in the South Pacific. He had been in the
South Pacific since November of 1942 and had seen action on both Tarawa late
last year and Saipan this summer. These have been two of the bloodiest battles
of the Pacific action. Although he would survive those actions, he ultimately
lost his life in service of his country. The Navy announced Powell’s death on
August 29. His wife Norma, now a war widow like so many other young women, said
she was not informed where her husband had been killed. Powell stared in
fifteen Lone Ranger serials produced by Republic Movies and released in 1938.
