WAR CLAIMS PRIZE FIGHT
Louis-Conn Rematch Cancelled
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The heavyweight title rematch between Joe Louis, now a sergeant in the army, and Billy Conn, a corporal, was cancelled yesterday by Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, citing “the standards and interests of the army do not permit the proposed contest to be carried out.” The secretary ordered the two soldiers “returned at once to their military duties.” Three hundred thousand dollars in tickets have already been sold for the match, which has a gate of one million dollars. A plan is in place to take over one hundred thirty-five thousand from the gate to pay debts incurred by Louis and Conn. The fight had been scheduled for October 12 in New York’s Yankee Stadium. Promoter Mike Jacobs said any comment would have to come from War Boxing, Inc., as he was working for that organization.
