HOUSES MAY BE SEIZED BY U.S.
Needed for War Workers
WASHINGTON, D.C.—John B. Blandford, chief of the National Housing Administration (NHA), announced yesterday that the government will begin offering to lease private homes within transportation distance of war industries to provide housing for war workers. According to Blandford, if voluntary leasing “…does not yield a sufficient amount of necessary housing on time, we shall…recommend the compulsory use of available private facilities through billeting, commandeering, requisitioning, and similar devices.” He stated this action is needed due to extreme shortage in housing for the expected 1,600,000 new war workers through June of next year that cannot be accommodated by construction underway. The program will commence within two weeks and will encompass fifty over-crowded war production centers.
