Northern
War Industries Supply Fans
CHICAGO—Negro
families have moved north by the tens of thousands to work in war industries.
With their pockets full of war-worker money and gas rationing preventing motor trips,
fans pack the grandstands at Negro League games. Business is so good that a new
minor league has been started, the Negro Midwest League. Furthermore, the Negro
League World Series was revived last year, which had been on hiatus since 1927;
game one this year is scheduled for September 21. Many of the teams continue the
practice first started in the 1930s by the independent team the Indianapolis
Clowns, a pantomime game used to warm up
before the competition begins that has come to be known as shadow ball.
