STEEL DEMAND LESSENS
Scrap Depots To Be Opened
NEW YORK, N.Y.—The industry publication Iron Age announced this week a plan by the steel industry to establish fifty scrap depots throughout the country. The purpose of the depots is to handle a “huge flood of…scrap which is expected in the next two to three months.” By centralizing scrap in depots, it can be kept out of manufacturing plants, which will help keep production up. On October 6, the War Production Board (WPB) revoked five orders, lifting or easing restrictions on several metals and materials. Revoking the orders was in response to improved supplies and intended to assure civilian production continues. Production of steel ingots increased by half a point this week to ninety-six per cent of capacity.
