WAR REPORTERS CASUALTIES
Jack Singer Missing in Pacific
CHICAGO, Ill.—The International News Service announced today that newspaperman Jack Singer has failed to return from a task force sortie in the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO). On hearing the news, Secretary of Navy Frank Knox, who is the publisher of the Chicago Daily News, reflected, “The long chances war correspondents take…fills me with a great sense of pride. Their work is very admirable and creditable to the profession.” Singer is the third casualty in the ranks of newspapermen in the past few days. Last week, Pulitzer prize–winning correspondent Larry Allen failed to return from a raid on Tobruk in North Africa, and Joe James Custer was seriously wounded in action with the Pacific fleet in the Solomon Islands.
