Pilot Killed During Mishap
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Department of the Navy announced yesterday that Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander of the United States Pacific Fleet, was injured in an air crash on the west coast. While the pilot was killed in the crash, the 57-year-old admiral said he was “none the worse.” The cause of the crash and its specific location have not been revealed, nor have the admiral’s injuries been announced. The admiral was in the states for a conference with his commander, Admiral Ernest J. King, who presented Nimitz with a Distinguished Service Medal for the Coral Sea and Midway victories in May and June of this year, respectively. Admiral Nimitz was given control of the Pacific on December 31 last after Admiral Husband E. Kimmel was removed following the Pearl Harbor attack.
