FDR AVOIDS VACATION QUESTION
Bypasses Gas Ration Issue
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Paul Leach, Washington correspondent for the Chicago Daily News, today questioned President Roosevelt at a press-radio conference why, due to a ruling by the Office of Price Administration (OPA), an Easterner holding an A gasoline ration card could take a vacation amounting to several hundred miles of driving while another person holding an A card is prohibited from driving a mile and a half to the golf course. The president side-stepped the question, but quipped, “Won’t Frank let you take a vacation?” The Frank in question is Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, who is the publisher of the Chicago Daily News and, therefore, Leach’s boss. The president’s quip drew laughter from those gathered for the conference.
