WOLVERINE HALFBACK MISSING
Pilot Downed in China
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—University of Michigan All-American halfback Tommy Harmon has been reported missing in action in China, his father said, after receiving a telegram at 6 p.m. Eastern War Time (EWT) last night. Lieutenant Harmon, a pilot with the 449th fighter squadron based in China, has been missing since October 30. Louis Harmon, the halfback’s father, said the younger Harmon had been missing one other time when he crashed in Central American April last. Michigan coach Fritz Crisler visited the Harmons to comfort the family. He is quoted as saying he has “…every confidence in Tommy as a competitor and [I] believe…he’ll get out of this all right.” Harmon was an All American for Michigan in the 1939 and 1940 seasons. He is credited with two Japanese Zero kills.
