JAPANESE LAND ON WAKE
Marine Heroes Holding for Now
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Multiple reports indicate Japanese forces landed on Wake Island in the mid-Pacific yesterday morning. Japanese Imperial headquarters released a report that was broadcast on Tokio radio claiming the island has been fully conquered, but a U.S. Navy report acknowledging “…an enemy force effected a landing on Wake the morning of the twenty-third…” did not similarly acknowledge loss of the island or the end of the heroic stand by the marines. Tokio radio stated two Imperial destroyers were lost in the invasion. Marine defense against a dozen attacks by the Japanese on the tiny island since American entered the war on December 7 has been a bright hope in the face of Allied setbacks all across the Pacific.
