WPB: WAR NEEDS WOMEN
1,000,000 This Year Alone
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The War Production Board estimates one million women will be needed for skilled positions. This figure is part of the ten million workers the WPB says will need to be added this year to meet the goals of war production. Currently five million workers are employed in war industries. The women needed for war production will be required to fill skilled positions. Labor director of the WPB Sidney Hillman said, “Airplanes can sink battleships. Women can build airplanes. War is calling on the women of America for production skills.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt has set a policy of increasing the output of existing war industries by requiring plants to operate seven days a week.
