MILEAGE NOT GALLONS
Distance Limit May Replace Gas Ration
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Insiders yesterday stated the War Production Board (WPB) is considering a plan to shift from limits on gasoline consumption to limits on miles driven as the means of conserving rubber. This seemed to be confirmed by WPB chairman Donald M. Nelson when he said the board was considering an alternative plan for gasoline rationing. The sources indicated the new plan would provide each driver with a basic allotment of miles based on his needs for work and family. A periodic check of the odometer on the driver’s vehicle would be the means for verifying compliance. At the same time, officials at the Office of Price Administration (OPA) stated that nation-wide rationing of gasoline is the only means of ensuring proper rubber conservation.
