BATTLE FOR GUADALCANAL RAGES ON
Offensive Continues after Henderson Field Victory
SYDNEY—Allied forces engaged the Japanese 4th Infantry Regiment on November 1 in the Point Cruz area of Guadalcanal. By November 3, the Japanese forces were destroyed. With victory in sight, our forces were surprised by Japanese forces landed by the Tokyo Express—the nighttime Japanese naval actions—near Koli Point on the Lunga River perimeter. Col. Chesty Puller and his marine battalion along with two battalions of the 164th infantry attacked the Japanese at Koli Point. On November 8, Allied forces began an encirclement of the Japanese forces at Gavaga Creek near Koli point; this action is still underway.
