LOUISVILLE CLOSED TO JOB SEEKERS
Housing Shortage Blamed
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Louisville area, including the surrounding counties in Indiana, has been closed by the War Manpower Commission (WPC) to those seeking jobs in war industries. The statement today from the WPC indicated it had “…closed the border…” to stem the influx of men and women looking to become war workers . This action was deemed necessary due to the housing situation in the Louisville area, which is suffering from what the WPC calls an “acute housing shortage.” Now those seeking war jobs in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and Clark County and Floyd County in Indiana must first obtain the proper paperwork from the nearest United States employment service office to clear them for work in the Louisville area. The WPC was established by Executive Order 9139 issued by President Roosevelt April 18 of last year to determine employment needs in various industries.
