JAPANESE BOMB OREGON
Balloons Drop Incendiary Devices
EUGENE, Ore.—The army disclosed yesterday that a number of incendiary bombs have been dropped by the Japanese on the forests of Oregon. The information was revealed by Colonel James W. Fraser while touring lumbering and logging operations in the area. Speculation is the devices were dropped from unmanned balloons launched from submarines off the coast, likely controlled by a timing mechanism to release the bombs when over the forests. Each balloon carried a cluster of incendiary devices design to spark fires throughout the forests of the Northwest. Colonel Fraser further speculated a coordinated attack could be expected combining the balloon-delivered devices, airplane bombers, and submarine shelling along with on-shore saboteurs.
