Czechs Executed in Retaliation
LONDON, England—Full military honors were accorded to Reinhard Heydrich, Gestapo protector of Bohemia and Moravia, at his burial yesterday. Adolf Hitler attended the funeral and declared Heydrich “…one of our martyrs…” and gave him “…the highest award of the German order.” Heinrich Himmler declared “a holy duty to avenge…” Heydrich’s death. Prague radio also announced yesterday forty-one more Czechs have been executed in retaliation for Heydrich’s assassination, bringing the total to two hundred and seventy-five. Heydrich died last week after his car was bombed and he was machine-gunned in the streets of Prague. Heydrich was known as Der Henker, which translates to The Hangman, due to his bloody reign as protector.
